No Terminal is Ever Free – What You Should Know

Has someone offered you a free terminal if you switch your credit card processing? The saying “nothing in life is ever free” holds true in this case as well. Merchant service providers that offer the free terminal will inflate other standard fees to cover the cost of the free equipment.

Questions to Ask

How much is this machine worth?

A new standard terminal will range in price from $99 to $400. A new dual communication terminal (dial/IP) will range from $400 to $900. A wireless terminal will range in price from $600 to $1000.

What will the monthly and annual fees?

Typical monthly fees should not exceed $25 per month. That $25 should include statements, reporting, and support. An annual fee should not exceed $120. Some merchant service providers will inflate the monthly and annual fees to recover equipment cost. For example: You were provided a free terminal with a 3 year contract and the monthly fee was $45 and the annual fee was $299. You have now been charged $1257 in unnecessary charges to cover “free terminal” expenses.

How long is the contract?

A merchant contract should not exceed 3 years. Most merchant service providers will charge a cancellation fee if the term is not fulfilled and will ask for your return of the “free terminal”. In many cases if you do not return it, they will charge a hefty fee for the terminal.

Is the machine yours after you complete the contract?

Even after all of the inflated fees that you have paid to cover the cost of terminal, it still may not belong to you after you fulfill the terms of the merchant contract.
